The City of Concord was founded in 1796 and is located in the piedmont of North Carolina in the western half of Cabarrus County. Concord (which means "harmony") is the largest city in Cabarrus County in both land area (approximately 58.88 square miles) and population (approximately 65,431). Concord's City Government is governed by a Mayor and seven City Council Members, all of which are elected at-large from area districts for staggered four-year terms.
In the mid 1800's to 1920, Concord became a booming textile and banking center. Today, Concord has a diverse economic base that includes distribution, manufacturing, racing and professional services. Concord is home to the Lowes Motor Speedway, Concord Mills Mall, the Concord Convention Center and Embassy Suites, Carolinas Medical Center - Northeast, and Concord Regional Airport.
The Concord Sister Cities Association was established in 1991. In 1993, Killarney, Ireland was chosen as Concord's first Sister City. Since that time numerous exchanges have taken place between the citizens of Killarney and Concord that have been very beneficial to both cities. In 2006, Concord's Rocky River Golf Club twinned with the Killarney Golf and Fish Club to officially join two premier golf facilities.
