Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club
Telephone : +353 (0)64 6637307
Background:
In early March 1982 as a result of serious pollution on the Lower Lake a group of local anglers decided to form a new angling club. They arranged a public meeting at Christy McSweeney’s for Friday March 12th 1982 which was attended by about fifty anglers and it was decided that on the following Friday a new club would be formed. On Friday 19th March 1982 the Killarney Salmon and Trout Angling Club was formed and the objectives of the club were as follows:
To highlight where pollution is a danger to the lake.
To defend the right to fish for salmon and trout on Killarney's Lakes.
To develop where necessary a salmon and trout restocking program.
To protect angling for salmon and trout.
To promote and develop angling in the Killarney area.
ANGLING IN THE KILLARNEY VALLEY
The Killarney lakes are three in number, Lough Leane 5000 acres is the largest followed by Muckross Lake and the Upper Lake. They are excellent for Salmon and Brown Trout. Trolling for Salmon or Fly-fishing for Trout are the most popular means for angling with flies such as Bibio, Black Zulu, Jungle Cock and Alder and early in the season the Duck Fly for Trout.
There are many other smaller lakes in the Killarney district which contain large stocks of small Brownies and will provide the dedicated angler with great fun.
Rainbow Trout fishing can be had on Barfinnihy Lake.
River fishing for both Salmon and Trout can be had on the rivers Laune and Flesk.
Beach fishing on Inch, Rossbeigh, Brandon, Castlegregory and Ballinskellig.
Rock Fishing at Kells, Valentia and Dingle.
Deep Sea at Caherciveen, Kenmare, Dingle and Fenit.
Permits and Licenses:
Permits are required for fishing on the Rivers Laune and Flesk but not on Killarney Lakes. For tourists a daily or 21 day Salmon License is available, also permits for Barfinnihy Lake.
Permits and Licenses can be obtained from O' Neills Fishing Tackle Shop in Plunkett Street, Killarney. Tel: 064 31970. Fax: 064 35698.
Where a large stock of fishing supplies are available...please note that the only live bait allowed are worms. There is no Course Fishing in the area but it is available in the nearby Cork District.
